replanting Iris a second time #813267

Asked October 05, 2022, 1:05 PM EDT

I too iris from my moms garden in western MD and replanted it in charleston, SC 15 years ago. They are alive but not blooming or proliferating. I want to replant them in a garden in Frederick, MD. Any suggestions?

Expert Response

You can certainly try moving them and seeing how they do, but the ideal timing for transplanting was back around June and July, so it's getting late to move them and give them enough time to re-establish enough roots before winter. Poor blooming could have been due to crowding since established Irises are best divided every few years. (Even though you moved them once before that, if kept in dense clumps instead of being separated, perhaps they were still too crowded.) Or, maybe they weren't getting enough sun in their new location.
