Boxwoods dying on interior #813265

Asked October 05, 2022, 12:40 PM EDT

I have three boxwoods in a trough planter. They have survived the past 2 winters (with help) and started off the summer quite healthy. Now the interior of all three appears to be dying. The exterior looks green, but just below the surface the internal leaves are brown and dead. I don’t see any issues with the bark. Is this a watering issue? Or some kind of blight? And is there anything to do about this to save these plants?

Expert Response

Boxwoods can be temperamental to grow in Colorado due to our dry climate and strong sun. They are susceptible to winter burn.

Their ideal growing conditions are in dappled shade.  Along a house foundation, they grow better on the north side.

You mentioned the plants are growing in a trough.  It could be the trough is too shallow for the roots.  In addition, the trough would need adequate drainage holes.

Boxwoods are sensitive to drought injury.  The fall of 2021 in the Denver area was extremely dry.  If they didn't receive enough water at that time, they could have suffered damage that has just begun to show up.
