Planting an Amur Chokecherry #813243

Asked October 05, 2022, 10:34 AM EDT

Hi, I have an Amur Chokecherry that is in its last years on my very small city lot. The city forester suggested I could succession plant. Good idea, I think! Is it still okay to plant the new tree in the next two weeks? How far away does it need to be from the original, dear tree? Placement is an issue given how small the lot is, and the existing garden beds that don't want to get shaded out. Okay to plant about 5 feet from old tree? Any other tips? All best, Mia

Thank you for your question.  You can certainly succession plant however planting your new chokecherry so close to the existing plant will put it in competition for sunlight, water and soil nutrients.  Your new chokecherry may "limp along" and not thrive until the existing tree has died.  I would suggest planting your new tree in the spring so it has a chance to establish itself before winter.  I have included links below with more information on the planting and care of chokecherry.  Best wishes.
