Macomb County Ornamental Trees #813223

Asked October 04, 2022, 9:25 PM EDT

Are any ornamental pear trees deemed an invasive species, by the USDA, Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources or MSU Dept. of Agriculture or any official agency? My neighbor just told me that Cleveland Pear that I intended to plant is an invasive species. Is this true? Is there a difference between a Bradford and a Cleveland Pear tree? thank you for your prompt attention.

Expert Response

Good Afternoon,
The Bradford Pear is listed as invasive.  Cleveland Pear is in the same family and not recommended for use in home gardens in the midwest.  Good alternatives for an ornamental, small tree with showy flowers include serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) for USDA zones 4 through 9 or flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) for USDA zones 5 through 9.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for using our service.
