Apple Tree #813193

Asked October 04, 2022, 4:51 PM EDT

Hi, I have a Honey Crisp tree that did not blossom or produce at all this year, first time in the 7 or 8 years that we have had it. I trimmed it really well, maybe too much 2 fall/winters ago. It did produce some last summer during the really dry/hot summer. This year/summer nothing at all however it is growing a bunch of off shoots again and I am leary of trimming it again. Can you advise if I should? what time of the fall/winter is best? I will send pictures, maybe you could circle what you think I should trim if I need to trim again? I do have a Red Regent apple tree that produced a few this year, but not a really good crop- Not sure if this matters, but we did plant a Cherry tree last fall that is all within the same area.

Hi Denise,

Pruning apple trees is an art. Your tree needs to be opened up so air circulates better and light penetrates the interior of the tree. Also, you should prune off all the shoots that are coming from the bottom of the trunk, as well as the smaller second trunk that’s developing.

Honeycrisp is often a biennial producer, bearing fruit one year and then resting the next summer, so this may not be related to your trimming. However apples set buds for fruit and leaves the previous year, so you may have pruned off shoots that would have developed fruit. Late winter — February — is the best time to prune an apple tree.

If you’re uncomfortable tackling this job yourself, have a certified arborist do it for you. You can find one here:

Hope that helps!
