Expert Response

This looks like a Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa), but if it's not local, we can't be sure it's not a species that isn't grown here due to hardiness differences. That said, if this was Connecticut, it's probably a Kousa given its appearance and the fact that most species grown there can also be grown here.

Hello Miri,

Thank you for the reply. Yes, the tree is in Connecticut. I’ve never seen fruit this big on a kousa dogwood before, but I guess there are numerous cultivars of kousa.

Best regards,

You're welcome. Yes, it could be that the Kousa cultivar has larger-than-normal fruit, or perhaps pollination was great and so each seed within the fruit cluster is maturing, allowing the entire fruit to grow to its largest size. (Fruits don't usually swell to their full size, if they develop at all, around seeds that are infertile.)
