Fig Tree Concerns #813083

Asked October 03, 2022, 7:25 PM EDT

Hi there! I’m hoping you will be able to help advise about my fig tree. I think the weird weather this year impacted it. I’ve had this Olympian Fig tree for about 5 years, and last year it produced well for its size. There are lots of baby figs but they are hard and stunted. They have barely developed over the past few months. Is there any hope this year? Will it be ok for next year? This one is about 6ft tall. I also have a Desert King Fig tree that’s much taller but having similar issues. I will include some pics as well of the Olympian Fig tree. Most leaves have the little brown and yellow speckles, and some are completely yellow. Earlier this summer several leaves were curling at the edges, too. Thank you!

Expert Response

Dear Fellow Gardener,

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension about your fig tree. I’m so sorry that it is having difficulties.

Fig trees can fall victim to a few different diseases in our area. This pictures you sent look like your trees may be infected with rust, which is caused by a fungus. The fungus can spread by splashing water.

In order to prevent further spread

  • Collect and burn the leaves
  • Do not water overhead or get the leaves wet
  • Provide good air circulation around the plant
  • Mulch and fertilize

If these steps do not help, you can spray a fungicide – see your local nursery for recommendations and follow the container directions for application.
