Indian Wax Scale?? On Goat's beard...now what? #812895

Asked October 02, 2022, 12:24 PM EDT

Just saw this in side yard on 1 of my Goat's Beard (GB) (between AC unit and hydrangea. with American violets at front of bed). No evidence of same on GB on other side of AC unit, or other nearby plants. I just cut the 'scale' GB to ground level, removing all 'scale' and nothing now on ground, but dirt and cut ends. Is it Indian Wax Scale? And what do I do now and in upcoming months, through spring and summer 2023? I try to not use any chemicals in garden/yard. Help!

Expert Response

That does look like Indian Wax Scale and you have done well to remove it from your garden by cutting the plant back. This is easy and ideal with herbaceous plants that are going to die back anyway.
It's a bit more challenging with woody shrubs and trees.

They can get on many types of plants but you will want to keep an eye out for them on Chinese and Japanese Holly, Camellias, and others listed if they are growing nearby.
