Identifying a flowering shrub. See picture #812333

Asked September 26, 2022, 8:36 PM EDT

Hoping to identify this shrub so that I can care for it properly by pruning, etc.  I hope to get a reply from you. Thank you

Expert Response

Thanks for the question.  I am not immediately familiar with the plant.  Does it have a woody base? Can you share some pictures of the fall foliage?

Thank you so much for answering my question.
Yes, it is woody, and the twigs curly up. I actually make a Halloween broom each year from this shrub.
Here's what it looks like now, and the original picture.
I'm trying to remember the APP name that identifies images by comparison.

I am still striking out on what species this is.  We have so many ornamentals in Alaska now it can be hard to keep up with.  I tried using the "Seek" app which will give some idea from pictures.  You might try that since you can get to the plant in person.

I can help with some care and pruning advice though because most woody vines are the same.  If this isn't a fruit producer you don't need to worry about pruning unless you want the plant to be smaller and keep it from encroaching into unwanted areas.  When you prune it is best to do later in October through March or April when it is cold because insects and pathogens are not spreading at that time.  Also with most vines or trees not pruning more than about 10% of what is there helps to keep from shocking the plant. Really vigorous growing vines can handle more pruning.

Thank you very kindly. As you can see, it's getting too lanky and needs a haircut (just a trim!).
I will try that SEEK App. Thanks for that info.
With the seeds and pods at the ends of the branches, birds love it. And the pods kind of look like a pea pod, so I'll keep seeking the answer.
Don't be surprised if I find out and write you back.
Thanks for all of your help.

I'd love to hear what you find out.  The seed pods help a bit putting it in the legume family. I still don't know this one unfortunately but I will keep looking around.

Finally, I think, an identifier through the Google Lens picture match site. Went to Google, then chose the camera icon and uploaded my picture.

I'm settling on the Sweet broom Genista stenopetala

Have a wonderful holiday season.
