Established Ivy in Difficult Location #812100

Asked September 25, 2022, 4:25 AM EDT

Hello. We have mature ivy growing in a raised bed between a arborvitae hedge, a fence, and a retaining wall following the entire back of our property. The ivy also continues on the other side of the fence lines into the neighboring properties, but it originated in the corner of our yard. We would like to remove the ivy, take down the fence, and and continue to use the raised beds for the arborvitae hedge. We have removed all of the ivy multiple times in the last 25 years, but of course we can't get to all of it in this configuration and without further steps it quickly grows back. Is there a way to keep it from growing back that will not be not detrimental to the arborvitaes?

Expert Response

Hello,

Good work keeping the ivy at bay for 25 years.

Herbicides effectively control ivy. You'd want to pull ivy away from the plants that you want to keep and keep the herbicide from contacting the stems, leaves, roots of the arborvitae. Use a piece of cardboard or plastic to protect your plants while applying the herbicide.
