What is digging in my lawn #811986

Asked September 23, 2022, 4:09 PM EDT

Something is digging holes in my lawn. What can I do to stop it?

Itasca County Minnesota

Expert Response

This is pretty typical for field mice (aka voles), although a ruler in the picture would have helped with scale.
Usually the populations are small.  Mouse traps work but should be set in a box so that chipmunks and birds are not hurt. Here is some information. https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/vole-damage

Two more photos with ruler. I hope this helps.  Would mole bait dropped in the holes help- basically poisoned peanuts.

The ruler photos are helpful.  This appears to be voles. As noted in my first response and in the link, poison bait or traps should be put in a box trap to prevent killing non-targeted animals.
Thanks.
