Willow Oak dropping tips of branches #811793

Asked September 22, 2022, 11:32 AM EDT

My willow oak is dropping many tips of its branches again for the third year in a row. the leaves that are attached are green and healthy looking, but the stems look like they have been neatly clipped off. Is there a disease or pest that is causing this? what treatment might help?

Expert Response

We don't think that you need to treat/do anything.
This is kind of like nature's pruning and we'd not expect it to hurt your tree in the long term.
The most likely culprit is squirrels, who do this in fall as they search for and harvest acorns to store for winter. (and sometimes for nesting).
