Brown spotting on young cherry tree leaves #811694

Asked September 21, 2022, 2:40 PM EDT

Hello! We planted our little cherry tree this spring. Over the summer I noticed the occasional brown spot on the shiny green leaves; over the past week or two the brown spotting has gotten more pronounced (see photo). Is this normal, or should we be concerned? In case it's relevant we live in 80211, so it's fairly urban and as you know it has been very warm here this summer. We have some grasshoppers and a few japanese beetles but mostly have been able to stay on top of the beetles and we just let the grasshoppers do their thing. Thank you!!

It almost looks like sunburn, but that may be a fungal issue. I recommend submitting these photos to the Jefferson County Plant Diagnostic Clinic for a more definitive diagnosis.

Damage is usually minor with fungal diseases however raking up and discarding the leaves this fall will reduce the possibility of pathogens overwintering in the leaf debris and re-infecting the foliage next season. Though I can't say definitively it is a fungus, better safe than sorry.
