Verticillium wilt in lemony lace elderberry #811271

Asked September 18, 2022, 4:41 PM EDT

I am trying to determine if verticillium wilt is the cause of wilting and damage of my lemony lace elderberry.  The wilting was sudden on 2 of 5 such plants in my yard. Watering has been consistent and comparable for all plants. Seems to match what I’ve read about the disease, but how do I know?

Christine:  Thanks for your question.  While the symptoms in your pictures are not inconsistent with verticillium wilt, I recommend that you confirm this as it is such a serious disease.  Here is the link to the Penn State Plant Disease Clinic.
https://plantpath.psu.edu/about/facilities/plant-disease-clinic/submission-forms.  This is a free service and they will be able to provide a definitive diagnosis.  Make sure to follow the directions for sample type and preparation to ensure adequate material for the analysis.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
