Dogwood questions #811236

Asked September 18, 2022, 10:24 AM EDT

Hello. I have two dogwood questions. I have a flowering dogwood I've yet to plant. Is it diseased and should I throw it out? The leaves are dark green and spotty. I also have a redosier dogwood that looks single stem. Is it possible to train it to be single stem tree or will it eventually turn into a shrub?

Expert Response

Greetings, The flowering dogwood appears to be showing signs of summer stress such as mildew, limited nutrients and heat.  I suggest you get it planted as soon as possible to get acclimated before winter.  With fall planting, I always recommend applying a ring of mulch for insulation and moisture retention.  The red osier will always want to be a multi-stemmed shrub as it is in the wild.  I think you would struggle with it by trying to only keep one stem.
