Friend or foe? #810351

Asked September 11, 2022, 5:40 PM EDT

I am near Mapleton, with the river in the backyard. Taking down the blueberry net, saw series of eggs in many places on the netting. I've never seen this before. Any idea what this may be? Some appear older, brownish color, and some are fresh and white.

Expert Response

Identifying organisms at the egg stage is very, very difficult to do. So many eggs look alike. Without distinguishing colors (as with ladybug eggs), features (as with lacewing eggs), or laying patterns (as with stinkbug eggs), I simply can't give you a good identification.

However, if you are able to keep track of these eggs, and snap photos when they hatch, I will have a better chance of providing an accurate identification.

Sorry I can not be of immediate help.

Thank you, Dr. Langellotto.  Some have hatched into teeny tiny grey inchworms with black heads, about 1/16" long.  Any guesses?

Thanks so much!

Hi Peg,

Is there any chance you can share a photo?

Your description helps me narrow it down to the Holometabolous insect orders. A photo would help me narrow it down, further

I did try... trying again...
I also noticed a couple of those tiny whiteflies flying in that area...

Thanks!

Hi Peg,

I apologize for the trouble. I can see that an .mp4 file (audio file) was uploaded, but the system has a note that says 'file type not allowed'.

You can also try emailing me directly at <personal data hidden>. It might be easier to attach the photos to an email, versus in the Ask Extension system.
