Tree Bug #809973

Asked September 08, 2022, 1:35 PM EDT

I have a White Pine dying. It looks like a bug infestation. They are boring into it all the way up the trunk and saw dust is dropping continually. See attached pictures. Can you tell me what it is and how I should handle this. I assume that I need to cut it down immediately. What should I do to keep this from spreading to neighboring trees ?

Expert Response

Sorry to see that you have an infestation problem on your white pine.  From your description and photos, it could due to Bark Beetles, Pine Sawyer Beetles, or White Pine Weevils.   If the tree is more than half affected, cutting it down and either chipping the wood very small or burning it would be the safest bet to avoid spreading the infestation.  If you decide the tree can be saved, chemical treatments are also available. Please see the articles below from Purdue and OSU.  The Purdue article covers all of the likely suspects along with best practices, whereas the OSU article focuses on the White Pine Weevil.   Best of luck to you with your infestation eradication effort.
