What is wrong with my White Oak tree? #809885

Asked September 07, 2022, 6:35 PM EDT

I have seen some brown leaves on what I think is a white oak tree, but assumed it was left over from last year’s cicadas. I recently realized this seems to be a bigger problem. We have a lot of old oaks in the neighborhood, mostly red oaks, and I don’t see this on any other trees in the neighborhood. These clumps of leaves turn brown, and then fall to the ground. The brown leaves seem to be all over the tree. It’s a very large tree, I estimate at least 100 years. I have other photos, but chose the best three. Is there something I can do to save this tree? THANKS for your help.

Expert Response

Delayed symptoms from the twig damage due to last year's cicadas is a possibility, but unfortunately we can't arrive at a specific diagnosis from the symptoms we can see in the photos. We suggest you have a certified arborist assess the tree. Some arborist companies have their own diagnostic lab where they can test samples for pathogens (or they can send samples to another lab for testing) if an infection is suspected, though not all infections are serious or would require treatment. We don't keep track of specific arborist businesses or individuals, nor do we recommend particular companies, but you can use the link above to search for licensed arborists. Some are employed by tree-care companies and others work independently as consultants.
