What Grass Is This? #809509

Asked September 05, 2022, 2:06 PM EDT

In late spring, our landscaper had removed the grass from half of our side yard, put down new topsoil and new grass seed. It must have been bad grass seed. He had earlier relandscaped the other half with beautiful results. This time, large-bladed grass that resembles large crab grass came up in mass. It quickly grows to 6-8" high. We have been told it might be Johnson grass, which is very difficult to get rid of. As you can see from the attached picture, our lawn now consists mostly of this weed/grass. We have also attached a close-up picture of an individual plant. Can you confirm if this is Johnson grass or another weed? Also, can you tell us how to get rid of it? Our landscaper is trying to find out what to do about it. He thinks the drought-like conditions exacerbated it and says he will try overseeding in the fall. Meanwhile, our grass is a mess.
