Wasp or hornet? #808875

Asked August 31, 2022, 10:24 AM EDT

Hi, Are you able to identify this very large insect (over an inch long) on a leaf of a Black Eyed Susan plant in container on my patio. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi Karen,
Your photos are great. They enabled me to see that your insect was not a Yellowjacket wasp but most likely an American Hornet Moth. This is a link to the iNaturalist page for observations of the American Hornet Moth. I was struck by the sentence, "They are a near perfect mimic of yellow-jacket wasps."

Good eyes to notice it.
Thank you so much for helping to identify this hornet moth!
