Maple Tree issue #808743

Asked August 30, 2022, 1:09 PM EDT

HI, I have two rows of Sugar Maples in my front yard - we planted them about 5 years ago. 9 of them are doing great - lush, no bugs, they turn brilliantly in autumn. One (photos attached) has something wrong with it. It never fully leafs out and it always turns in July. If this fixable? What could be the diagnosis? Thx! Beside not being very full and turning way early, it seems to be ok.

Expert Response

Your tree may have stem girdling roots. One theory of the cause of stem girdling roots is that they develop as a result of trees being planted too deeply. When root systems are too deeply burred , less oxygen and water is available. The roots will grow up towards the surface of the soil and  encircle the trunk. If you remove the root that is girdling the trunk then the tree may recover. The first site explains about stem girdling roots.

The next site explain how to correct this problem.

If you are uncomfortable doing this then you could hire a certified arborist.

Hi - but I don't see any roots / uneven soil at the base.  Would I if this was the problem?

Yes, the tree was planted too deeply.

Thank you - two more questions - what is the bet time of the year to girdle?  Also, are there companies that you can hire for this service?

Thx.

Hire a certified arborist who has this specialized training to see if the root is still small enough that it can be safely removed.  The best time to do this is as soon as possible. https://www.treesaregood.org/
