What is this bug, Please? #808299

Asked August 27, 2022, 5:16 PM EDT

I have been finding a lot of these in my cats' water fountain. The fountain has a small UV light and sits on the floor. They seem to crawl up the electrical cord. Mostly they are drowned but some seem to hop rather than crawl. This bug is about 1/16th inch or a little bit more. Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi Janet!

This looks like a type of springtail. They do not bite or cause damage. They are usually found in places where there is dampness, organic matter, and/or mold. It would be fitting for them to be around your cat's water bowl. Our web page about Springtails provides information about them and how to manage them in a home. Insecticidal spays are not necessary nor recommended for them.
