Fig tree in our MN zone 4? #808264

Hi. My neighbor gave me a fig tree starter plant and it has grown about 18 inches tall in a pot that I have outside. Is this something that I can plant in my yard (lots of sun) in Minneapolis and expect it to thrive and bear fruit? If so, should I winter it inside for the first year or so? Thanks. Steve

It may be a ficus, which is the most common form of that species we see here.  They are grown as a fairly large indoor plant.  Ask your neighbor if that is what he gave you or if he actually has a plant that produces fruit.  Fig trees are not hardy here in our zone.  In fact, your plant should be brought in before the evenings get too cold, probably around the end of Sept. or mid-October.  Here is information on both:
