This is growing in the rocks at the base of a Miss Kim Lilac bush we are removing. Can you help identify it and any mitigation needed for surrounding shrubs.

This may be a slime mold fungus. However, a mycologist would be the best person to confirm this. Dr. Andrew Miller with the Illinois Natural History Survey is who we refer homeowners seeking identification of a fungus. I do not believe he is tied into this system.
