Tree ID: Sourwood or Black Gum or other? #807860

Asked August 24, 2022, 3:27 PM EDT

Can anyone tell me what species of tree this is by these three photos? I saw it at a local park this week in Nashville. I'm thinking Sourwood or possibly Black Gum? I've looked them up online and it seemed to have characteristics of both. Sorry, not the best photos, I couldn't get near the leaves above me and didn't have a good camera. There were three of these trees not far from one another. Can't remember exactly, but probably 40 or 50 feet tall. If it helps, the surrounding area featured a lot of trees you find in wetter habitats, such as Boxelder, Baldcypress, Sycamore, etc. This tree was near those but up on a slight ridge from them. Thanks for any help!

Expert Response

Hi Kevin,
It looks more like a black gum to me. I was able to walk out into my yard to compare just now - I have one of each. Sourwood leaves are more narrow and longer.
Best regards,
Sandy
