Expert Response

Hi Germaine,

Unfortunately, the chlorosis causing the maple's beautiful variegated foliage is due to a suspected issue with the trunk or roots (or possibly unsuitable pH).

However, there are some cultivars of other species out there that could give you a similar look! Eastern redbud (a native tree) has a variegated cultivar called 'Silver Cloud'.  Another native tree, Sweet Gum, has a variegated cultivar called 'Silver King'

Jamie

Hello Jamie,

Thanks for letting me know this is actually a deficiency in the tree. I guess the area in which it’s planted—in a drainage area—is causing the problem. I’ll see if I can get in touch with the company that maintains the property and let it know about the tree’s problem.

Best regards,

Germaine
