Sassafras trees dying? #807332

Asked August 21, 2022, 4:53 PM EDT

Hi there! In the past few weeks, I've noticed that the sassafras trees specifically are dying here on the edge of my property. My googling sends me to laurel wilt -- but it doesn't make sense because we are not in the south? They are planted on a slope, and I've been trying to give them some extra water so they are not hurting too much in this drought. Is there any identification that you can help me with? And troubleshooting on how to make sure these trees do not die? It makes me so sad.

Expert Response

Good morning Tina,

We believe this to be due to the dry, and hot weather we are having. We are seeing several trees do this. Trees do this in a drought as a way to compensate and protect themselves.
