Caterpillar Species #807319

Asked August 21, 2022, 3:36 PM EDT

I found a caterpillar in Grants Pass that looks like a blue horned caterpillar. My research tells me they only live in Europe and feed on Lime trees. Is it truly a blue horned caterpillar or is it another kind? See picture.

Expert Response

It does look like the caterpillar of Mimas tiliae, the lime hawk-moth, in the family Sphingidae. You can always drop the sample or mail it to the OSU plant clinic for validation of this finding from a taxonomist.
