Invasive Geranium? #806198

Asked August 14, 2022, 2:47 PM EDT

I have a geranium type plant that is taking over my yard. It grows very aggressively, taking over whole patches of open area, growing in cracks in the pavement and reaching several feet in diameter if left alone. I have likely pulled a hundred or more of these out of my beds and yard. Is this a native plant or something more invasive? Is there a better way for me to get rid of it or control the spread?

Expert Response

From the pictures you sent, this appears to be Geranium sibiricum, a non-native geranium in Minnesota. These plants are considered weedy  and can be aggressive. These plants spread a number of ways including by seeds. You can pull / mow / weed whip these plants to cut them back. Or you can also use a broadleaf herbicide to kill the plants. Do this before the seed capsules open (easiest to do while the plant is blooming).

After eliminating plants from an area, replant right away to prevent weed seeds from germinating when exposed to sunlight. In this case, shade plants will likely be your best option.

Good luck!
