cucumbers wilting #806018

Asked August 12, 2022, 9:20 PM EDT

this is a leaf from a burbee burpless cucumber. a delicious variety. but as you can see the leaf is turning yellow primarily between the veins. This garden is about 5 years old. it started out as heavy heavy clay. with coop poop, leaves, grass clippings, cover crops of rye, buckwheat and some left over sunflower seeds, the soil is improving. can anyone tell us what the issue is with this leaf and what we do about it? every year we have had some different type of issue with the cucumbers and the pickles. this is the first year for this particular problem. thank you. thank you

Expert Response

Hi, thanks for the question.

Looking at the picture it has the appearance of interveinal chlorosis; however, it may be a severe case of spider mite damage.  This starts as speckling on the leaves.  Take a look at the bottom of a leaf with the problem and look for small webbing (especially near vein).  If you have a 10x eyepiece look closely for movement (they are small). You can also put a piece of white paper on a work surface and whack an infected leaf on the paper and then look for movement on the paper (a moving speck of dust). If you don't find evidence of this pest, nutrient and or other issues may be at play.   Take a look at the following link and let me know what your find.

I look forward to your response.
