Asked August 12, 2022, 6:33 PM EDT

Can you tell me what type of bug this is? It was on a leaf of my cherry tomato plant. I brushed it off.

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

This is commonly called a Goldenrod soldier beetle and is in the Genus chauliognathus.  It feeds on other pests and so is considered beneficial.  For more information, see http://www.minnesotaseasons.com/Insects/goldenrod_soldier_beetle.html
