What type of tree is this (willow)? #805968

Asked August 12, 2022, 2:40 PM EDT

Would like to determine the type of this tree. I think it is some kind of willow, but would appreciate more specific identification. Is growing in our yard, near a damp area with other trees.

Expert Response

It looks as though you have a laurel willow (Salix pentandra), a shrubby willow that has a long bloom period.  It is dense and very hardy and is best pruned late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed.  For more detail, see  https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/trees/handbook/th-3-141.pdf
