We found several of these on the posts under our deck.

These are the old skins or exoskeletons (technically called exuviae) of cicadas. Cicadas are insects that live a part of their lives underground in the soil. When they emerge, they crawl up on surfaces like decks and trees and break out of these "skins" as they transition to adults with wings. Last year the periodical cicadas left a lot of these exuviae behind. At this time of year, you might see (and hear) the annual or "dog-day" cicadas.
