Thanks for the question.

Although you did not ask about it, the butterfly is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus). It actually has a striking yellow color to its wings but when they are folded as this one is, all you can see is the dark undersides of the wings. They are very attracted to liatris.

As to the insect, I am sorry to say that I cannot make an identification due to a lack of clarity and resolution when I enlarge it. If you might be able to get some additional pictures please send them to us.
