Gardening advice for a wilting hydrangea #805872

Asked August 11, 2022, 6:35 PM EDT

Hello, I recently purchased a pretty hydrangea with pink/white petals. Soon after planting it, the petals began to wilt and brown around the edges. The hydrangea is planted in a spot that gets dappled and full sun from about 8 am-noon. I am wondering if you have any advice for helping it thrive? Perhaps it is not getting enough sun, or the soil isn’t acidic enough? Thank you!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Margaret.  The factor you didn't mention was water, which hydrangeas need a lot of.  In fact, the word "hydrangea" means water vessel.  Wilting, brown-edged leaves means it isn't getting enough.  Here's an OSU article on the correct care:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/flowers-shrubs-trees/general-care-hydrangeas
Good luck!
