zoysia grass treatment #805843

Asked August 11, 2022, 4:32 PM EDT

My question is how to eradicate Zoysia grass which I consider a weed in my yard. I'm having my yard treated with 3 treatments of a chemical called Prosecutor by a lawn-care specialist. I would like to know if this is the right thing to do. My grass in the backyard is now dead. How long do I wait after raking the dead grass to seed. Can I wait and seed in November when it is getting cold. I am going to try to call you soon. I sent 2 pictures of the zoysia grass before treatment. Hopefully received in this message. Please contact asap.

Hi Beverly.  We sent your question to one of our Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulture specialists and his response is below.

The yard is being treated with a non-selective herbicide (which is the correct thing to do to remove zoysiagrass). If the yard has received the third treatment wait two weeks and then rake the dead grass. Don’t wait to reseed until November, reseed after you have raked the dead grass off (so two weeks after the last application). The best seeding window in Iowa is Aug. 15 to Sept. 30 so try to reseed in that window, waiting until later will limit how well the area can establish.
