Dahlia Invaders #805747

Asked August 11, 2022, 10:07 AM EDT

I grow dahlias and this year I am having a problem with Japanese Beetles (that I have seen) and perhaps other insects. At the direction of my local nursery, I sprayed with Captain Jack's Deadbug spray on 31Jul and then again on 9Aug. I haven't seen an actual beetle in a few days, but I continue to have blooms that look like they've been chewed. I'm attaching some pictures I took this morning. QUESTION 1: Is it possible that the beetles have chewed my buds before they even start to open--thus causing the chewed edges on the blooms? QUESTION 2: What's your feeling on the use of beetle traps? Do you have any other recommendations for stopping this plant damage? Thank you!

Expert Response

You are correct when you guessed that the Japanese Beetles were feeding on your dahlia’s buds. The insecticide you applied have controlled the Japanese Beetle infestation for the time being. Continue to monitor for Japanese beetles and remove the beetles from your plants. The best time to do this is early in the morning or early in the evening. If you pick more than a few every day reapply the insecticide.

Do not use Japanese Beetle traps as the can draw more beetles to your yard. The traps attract beetles using synthetic female sex pheromone and a blend of chemicals with a strong floral odor. Researchers developed them to monitor for the presence of Japanese beetles so that management strategies could be implemented.
