Cantaloupe fusarium wilt diagnosis #805513

Asked August 09, 2022, 7:16 PM EDT

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with my gold star muskmelon plant and what I should do about it. This is my 2nd year growing muskmelon and I didn't have this problem last year. I noticed maybe a month ago some spots of what looked like red goo coming out of the vine. I didn't really think anything of it because the rest of the plant looked great. But then I started losing some melons that had been pollinated properly and we're starting to grow in size, but then all of a sudden yellowed and died. A little later I noticed another spot on a vine with red goo, and after being away this weekend I came back to the plant's mature leaves starting to yellow and wilt (I had a timed sprinkler set up so it wasn't lack of water, the rest of my garden looks great.) I have maybe 5 mature melons that are almost ready for harvest and 1 that I harvested today. Are they safe to eat if it is fusarium wilt? And how bad is this disease? Online I was reading that the plant and soil should be destroyed if it is fusarium wilt. How do you go about destroying the soil? This isn't in a pot or raised bed, it's in the ground. My garden gets full sun. Not sure what the soil conditions are, I've never tested. I don't fertilize -- I turned in peat moss to my beds this spring before planting. Thank you for any information you can provide. I've included a photo of the plant when it was healthy and happily growing up the trellis, a picture of the red goo, and a picture of the now wilting leaves.

Those red lesions look like a fungal disease called Gummy Stem Blight. It is not one that is commonly found on backyard melons but sometimes crops up in commercial fields on the Eastern Shore. Here is our page that explains more about it:

And here is our Growing Melons in a Home Garden that is very helpful:

You will note that it lists the more common issues home gardeners face, including Powdery Mildew, which is the heavy white film on the leaves in your second photo:
