Photographed this on my exterior wall 2 days ago. Sure looks like a Joro spider.

Expert Response

Thank you for keeping an eye out for invasive species. The spider in your photo is a Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia). Yellow garden spiders are a common native species in the Willamette Valley and the peak time of year to see them is July - September.

They are in the same family as the Joro spider, but they would be considered distant cousins.

This webpage has some additional information on the yellow garden spider: https://www.nwf.org/Educational-Resources/Wildlife-Guide/Invertebrates/Yellow-Garden-Spider

Thank you again for being aware of invasive species, and please reach out if you see anything you think is unusual.

Thanks for the fast response!  Good to know that it's a local spider and not the invasive. -David
