Thornless Blackberries not producing #805211

Asked August 08, 2022, 12:26 PM EDT

I purchased a Black Satin Thornless blackbery last year. In the first year, I had a couple of canes produce what looked like berries but after flowering, they opened up and took on a pinkish color and never turned black. They almost had more of a raspberry soft texture instead of a firmer berry like the blackberry. I trimmed back the canes that produced these pink berries. The pics I've sent are of this years crop. The plant is planted in a raised bed and lateral canes spread quickly this year. But with the same results. I would love your assistance on how to improve my harvest! Much gratitude and thanks!!

Expert Response

I have consulted with a couple of colleagues and they both feel that the plant may have been mislabeled and is possibly a raspberry, a gold type like Anne or Fall Gold. Have you ever tried eating them? Did they taste good? If so, and they tasted sweet, it may be a different cultivar. One other thought was the heat, but we are leaning more toward a mislabel.

Thank you for your reply. I too speculated it could have been mislabeled. I have tried a couple and they have the look and texture of a raspberry. Not very sweet as well. Think I will see if TLC will refund or give me credit as I purchased from them a year ago.

I appreciate your thoughts and feedback!!
