Peach tree problem? #805052

Asked August 07, 2022, 1:18 PM EDT

I recently noticed our peach tree has a couple of spots that look like "resin" and is hard to the touch. What is this and is it a problem. The tree was planted spring of 2021. This year it didn't flower.

Ramsey County Minnesota

Expert Response

Leucostoma canker (also known as Cytospora or Valsa canker) There are no effective fungicides for Leucostoma canker. Surgically remove cankers as described in the Eradicating Cytospora canker section of the Penn state article.

We looked at the links you sent but are confused as to when to remove the cancers. The tree is less than an inch in diameter.

The following site will show you how to remove cankers from a peach tree. This site uses a plum tree but it is the same disease in a stone fruit trees.  Never remove cankers in wet weather.  It should be dry for several days after the canker removal.  If the canker in your peach tree is over 1/2 the diameter of the tree trunk  surgical removing it will not save the tree. Use 70% alcohol to sterilize your pruning knife.
