Orchard planning help #804867

Asked August 05, 2022, 6:28 PM EDT

Hello, my wife and I are in the early stages of planning a small family size orchard on our property located just outside Roseburg city limits in zone 8b-9a. We're hoping to plant the trees we decide on this upcoming Spring. Do you have any free resources you can send our way to help with planning, prepping, and implementing our orchard? Thanks!

Expert Response

To get started, I recommend you review the Sweet Cherry Orchard Establishment and Hazelnut Orchard Site selection publications (free to download or view online). Both are crop specific but provide a good overview of what you need to consider in terms of soil and climate when establishing an orchard. You will also find some relevant information in the Growing Tree Fruits and Nuts in the Home Orchard publication. OSU Extension publications on tree fruit and nut production can be found in the OSU Extension Catalog at https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/topic/agriculture/tree-fruits-and-nuts. I also recommend you reach out to Logan Bennet, the Small Farms Program Coordinator for OSU Extension in Douglas County.
