What is this, and how do we keep it from spreading? #804487

These are growing taller that 5 feet in some areas, and popping up throughout 4 yards and gardens around us. The appear to be growing in lines and are very woody. Trying to figure out what it is, and how to get rid of it. When we pull them from the lawn they seem to keep coming back. I have a up close picture of the stem and leaf formation of one that it about 4 feet (unnamed image).

We're thinking that this is a poplar or aspen seedling, and that the plants are growing from an underground tree root.  Do you have these types of trees nearby?  Just mowing the grass will keep them from growing taller.
