Hawthorne tree ? #804296

Asked August 02, 2022, 3:49 PM EDT

Although the leaves and this hawthorn tree itself both appear healthy, many of the fruits have this rusty-appearing covering this year. Is this normal or a disease of some sort ?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Your hawthorn has cedar-quince rust.  The finger-like structures on the fruit are fungal spores called aecia.   These require two hosts: a cedar or juniper and a member of the rose family, in your case the hawthorn.  They usually do not cause severe damage, and resistant varieties of these plants are available.
