We have been in invaded by these beetles, what kind are they?

Hi Mary,
Those look like ground beetles (Family: Carabidae). There are very many genera and species in this family, so I'm not sure which yours are. Here is one that looks pretty similar...

Most ground beetles are predators that feed on other invertebrates, but some like the one from the link feed on seeds. Regardless they will not do any damage indoors. They probably just wanted to get to a cooler place with the sudden arrival of the hot, dry weather.
You can vacuum these beetles up and dispose of them or release them away from your house outdoors. To prevent them from entering in the future, you could caulk up any gaps around the house and replace worn weather stripping around doors and windows.
