Rhizosphaera needle cast and Cytospora canker are two common fungal diseases of spruce trees in MN. Both fungus are seen when a Colorado Blue spruce is stressed. Plant Norway or white spruce instead of Colorado blue spruce and do not allow the tree to become stressed.
Cytospora canker is caused by the fungus Leucostoma kunzei. Disease begins when the tree becomes stressed by insect feeding, snow or ice damage, drought or other factors. Water the trees during drought.
Cytospora canker causes needles to turn brown or purplish-brown, then fall off.
You should see dead or dying branches are scattered throughout the tree. Cankers are located close to the trunk of the tree. They produce a thick layer of hard, dry, bluish-white resin that coat the area of the branch by the canker.

Rhizosphaera needle cast is a fungal disease of spruce trees that causes needles to turn brown and fall off. Tiny raised black dots in lines on needles are the spore producing structures of the Rhizosphaera fungus
Trees that are stressed from drought, or poor planting practices are more likely to suffer from Rhizosphaera needle cast. Water the tree during dry weather. https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/rhizosphaera-needle-cast
