Could you also attach a few photos of the entire garden area?
Does this help? Or are the photos too far away?
Thanks for your help.

Hello Kate:
What beautiful gardens! There are a number of problems that can affect asters. And climate and environmental issues can be a big factor as you must know with such extensive gardens.
You are probably aware of the disease of “Aster yellow”. I’ve attached an article with information.https://extension.psu.edu/aster-diseases
However, to get a definitive diagnosis please send a sample to the MSU lab.

Good luck!

Well snap! One more question...if it is aster yellow, pretty much all my natives are infected, so should I eliminate this garden completely and start over with resistant plants? I seeded that area originally with se mich genomes. Not a fan of putting sod back , but I guess I could do a limited amount with native borders.
It looks like there isn't any way to rely control the disease effectively, and I don't use insecticides. What do most people do when this happens?
Thanks for all your help.
I'll send a couple samples off to be sure.
Thanks,
Kate

I definitely would suggest you send in a sample for a definitive diagnosis. There are so many diseases out there coupled by this spring’s and summer’s weather patterns. I’ve attached another article that is very comprehensive regarding cultural practices if dealing with aster yellow.
