Mold (?) Fungus (?) on maple tree roots - Probably a ext specialist question #803737

Asked July 30, 2022, 9:44 AM EDT

I am removing buried landscape rock on top of good landscape fabric. It's around a very grown maple tree. The tree trunk is probably 6-8 ft away from the garage. The drip is over the garage. Roots have migrated thru the humus on the rock. I started watering this maple last summer (despite a ban - evil me). I have been watering (maybe 3x so far this summer) with an overhead sprinkler that may have hit where this mystery substance is growing. So this could be something that grew in the heavily shaded, wet, not the best drainage area. At first I thought it was a long forgotten dog pile I missed. But when I picked it out of my rock swifter, it was squishy. Then I thought the contractors cleaned off some white silicon in that area because that was the texture this was. But I just kept uncovering more. It even started to cover rocks themselves. The tree provides fabulous shade for the house. It's between multiple utilities lines coming into 2 houses. So I don't want to lose this tree let alone pay to have it removed. 1 - Do I need to worry about the maple or do some type of preventative care. I haven't found it in other areas around the tree. Just next to the garage. 2 - Can I use the rocks around some hostas in a egress window well?

Expert Response

This may be a fungus, as you've guessed, growing around the roots because of the fabric, watering, compaction, and shaded position.   Does the tree look healthy?  Has it kept all of its leaves, and do they show no sign of disease?   You can try to remove the fungus by carefully digging around the affected roots. Rinse off the root ball with your hose, and carefully cut away the affected sections.  Use a fungicide to help prevent more fungus from forming, and add new soil.  Also see the attached link for information about various fungi that affect maple trees.

The stones may carry the fungus, so completely wash them before reusing them.

Any impact on hostas?

If you clean the rocks thoroughly before using them and then place them around hostas, the fungus should not spread to those plants.
