Propagation of arborvitae from cuttings #803636

Asked July 29, 2022, 12:28 PM EDT

Hi, I am interested in propagating my techny arborvitae from a cutting. What is the best way to do this? What type and length of branch should I take? Is there a time of year that is best?

Expert Response

You can take a cutting now.  You will need to care for the cutting inside until spring.  The websites explain how.  The only difference I would suggest is that vermiculite is a good medium to use because it is sterile and holds moisture well at the root level.  It is also helpful at the early cutting stage to use a clear plastic tent to help with moisture control at the early rooting stage.  See the websites for more details:

Thank you so much Mary!
One additional question - once these are rooted can I plant them outside this fall? or should I overwinter them in a sunny indoor spot?
Thanks again,
Katie
