Western Red Cedar damage #803402

Asked July 27, 2022, 8:03 PM EDT

What can we do to help our Cedar tree overcome this girdling insect or disease. We planted the tree in 2015. The damage is about 7 ft up and just started showing up this Spring (2022). The tree lives in McKenzie Bridge, Oregon. The site is East of the 2020 Holiday Farm fire but did experience the 70 mph hot east winds. A few of our other trees were blown sideways, but not the cedars.

Expert Response

This might be occurring as a result of some unseen damage from wind or wind-blown debris that allowed entry beneath the bark.  It is not clear enough to determine what is there now.

Recommend that you ask an arborist to come look at the tree to recommend what, if anything, needs to be done based upon their up close observation.

If you see any evidence of insect or fungal disease, you could collect it and send it in for possible identification.  Identification would help determine any treatment that might be possible.

Insect samples may be sent to the Oregon State University Insect Clinic.  Here is their contact information - https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/plant-clinic/insect-id-clinic/how-submit-insect-and-spider-materials

Plant fungal disease samples may be sent for identification (for a fee) to the Oregon Department of Agriculture lab - https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/PlantHealth/DiagnosticServices/Pages/PlantPestsDiseases.aspx
